Adhesive Tape - We're Stuck On It
by kimberli kendrick - Thursday, 6 December 2007, 03:32 AM

By Margarette Tustle Tapes People Love To Use If you were to look in any given junk drawer you would probably find at least one kind of adhesive tape such as cellophane tape or masking tape. Most people own several different kinds of tape because we use different types for different jobs. Tape as we know it has been around for decades-masking tape was invented in 1925. You may own duct tape, electrical tape, basting tape (for sewing) and even floral tape. Adhesive tape has really become a part of our every day lives. We use it for everything from repairing a book to medical procedures. So, lets take a closer look at what is old-and what is new, in the world of adhesive tape. History Although people have been using natural adhesives like beeswax for centuries, it was not until the mid-1800s that American inventor Henry Day invented the first tape-like product. In the twentieth century, with the proliferation of synthetic materials like nylon, cellophane, and other products, there are now dozens and dozens of kinds of tape used for every type of task and in nearly every aspect of our lives. A Touch Of Humor There is a bit of adhesive tape humor associated with the invention of masking tape. Auto workers were looking for something that they could mark the paint lines on cars that would not damage the paint when it was removed. A scientist named Richard Drew was charged with the responsibility to invent a tape to fill the need. He made an adhesive tape that had an adhesive that was not overly sticky, but that would hold enough to do the job. The problem was that, in order to save money, the manufacturers only put the adhesive on the two edges of the tape and not in the middle. The auto workers complained loudly about this Scotch tape in a reference to the Scottish reputed reputation for frugality. The adhesive tape soon had adhesive applied to the whole surface. Scotch Tape Richard Drew invented another very popular adhesive tape as well-cellulose tape-which is also called Scotch tape for obvious reasons. It now comes in many different styles, finishes, sizes and even colors. You can get a matte finish, which seems to disappear when applied, and glossy, you can even get some with decorative designs to spruce up packages or envelopes. It even comes in a double-sided variety with adhesive on both sides. It comes in disposable dispensers, rolls that you can put in permanent dispensers, and now, even handy dispensers which allow you to take one small piece of adhesive tape at a time. Whats Its Use? Some job specific tapes include electrical tape which is used for repairing frayed wires or taping off ends of wires. Basting tape is an adhesive tape used by seamstresses to hold a hem or a seam when they are prepping an article for sewing. Medical tape can be used instead of stitches to allow physicians to seal an incision so that they can go back in if necessary-or to hold a cut together so that it can heal. By Margarette Tustle. Trick Your Body Into Losing Weight

By James Penn There is a wide choice of herbal remedies available over the counter that claim to help you lose weight. The majority of them work by suppressing the appetite or tricking your body into thinking its full. If you feel full then you simply dont want to eat, the less you eat, the more weight you are likely to lose. However while herbal remedies are usually organic due to them consisting of flower and plant material they are only suitable for helping with weight loss in the short term. Some could even possibly be dangerous. Another factor to take into account is that they are not miracle pills and you will only see results if you eat sensibly and follow a daily exercise regime. While some of the most popular appetite depressants are listed below, it would be wise to consult your doctor before self-medicating, even if it is only an herbal remedy. Ma-huang commonly known as Ephedra contains ephedrine and is commonly found in many weight loss supplements. However recently sales of this have become stricter but it can still be found. Ephedrine is known for its abilities to suppress the appetite but it has side effects such as dizziness, anxiety, and irregular heartbeat and in some cases has been known to cause heart attack. St Johns wort is another herbal remedy that is used in weight loss although primarily it is used to treat depression. This herb is used along with Ephedra in the product phen-fen. 5HT-P is the main ingredient in many over the counter remedies for weight loss. The remedy is extracted from a West African plant seed; however if taken in large doses it has been known to have a negative effect on the liver and as such care should be taken when using this remedy. Kite-o-san is a dietary supplement taken from the skeleton of crabs, shrimps and other shellfish. This cannot be ingested by the body and so passes through unabsorbed without adding a single calorie. As it passes through the body it binds with any fatty foods and takes these with it. Chromium is often promoted as a fat burner and weight loss aid, the evidence is inconclusive as to the weight loss benefits of this supplement. Cascara is one of a minority of herbs which has actually been approved by the FDA and is a very strong stimulant laxative. It is one of the ingredients found readily in many over the counter weight loss remedies. Glucomannan gives you a feeling of fullness when taken in weight loss supplements. It is said to work by delaying the absorption of glucose from the intestines. However it has thought to have caused obstructions in some people and as such is banned from sale in many countries. Guarana speeds up the brain and is used in weight loss products as a diuretic and stimulant. The product contains around 5% caffeine and has been thought to cause high blood pressure, dizziness, nausea and anxiety. Guar gum is used as a thickening agent and as such it gives a feeling of fullness when used as a weight loss aid. However it can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction due to its ability to swell up to 20 times. Speed Dating

By Coco Swan Heard enough pick-up lines? Dont like nightclubs? Sat through one too many bad blind dates? Cant seem too meet new dates? Pushed for time? Why not try speed dating? Fast dating. Hurry dating. 3 minute dating. 8 minute dating. Coco Swan has researched the newest dating fashion to sweep the world and gives you all the speed dating tips to increase your chances of getting a tick on your dating card. Speed dating is defined as an organized method of meeting potential romantic partners in which participants evaluate each other over the course of a single event through a series of brief one-on-one meetings. Coco did hear it being described elsewhere as musical chairs with people as prizes. The concept of speed dating is the brain child of Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish Ha Torah, who saw it as a way for Jewish singles to meet each other in large cities where they were in the minority. The word SpeedDating is actually a registered trademark of Aish Ha Torah. Speed dating is now a generic term for a similar concept. Other terms include: fast dating, hurry dating, 3 minute dating, and 8 minute dating. The first speed dating event occurred in Beverley Hills in 1998. After an episode in Sex and the City in 2000 the concept of speed dating really took off. Speed dating is less intimidating than meeting strangers in a bar, and certainly a lot safer. It is being billed as a fast fun way to meet a room full of eligible strangers who are also looking to date. It is a great way to meet new people and enlarge your social circle. Since dating is really a numbers game, speed dating is perfect, as you can meet as many as 25 prospective dates at one event. Various companies obviously use different numbers but the more popular sites were using between 8-25 as their meeting numbers. Usually the event you will be attending will have people in the same age range as yourself. There are also many niche speed dating events out there catering for gay speed dating, black speed dating, older man younger woman, and various religious affiliations, including Jewish speed dating. Speed dating is perfect for those who are time deficient. This concept is a real time saver as most people decide very quickly if they are going to be compatible romantically. How Speed Dating Works: A selected equal number of guys and girls attend a venue like a trendy lounge, caf or bar. Every one is given the equivalent of a dating card. Every one will just be introduced by their first name for security purposes. Encounters seem to run from 3 minutes to 8 minutes depending on the company you are using. At the end of the allocated time a bell will ring, or a glass will be clinked, and all the males will get up and move one place on. If you should fancy what you have seen then you tick the appropriate box on your card. If you are lucky enough for reciprocated interest then within 1-2 days the company will line the two of you up. Some companies are now incorporating online dating with their speed dating services and these then match you up online. These companies are also offering the service of looking at profiles before you attend and then the company can invite any one you fancy along to the same event as you. Sounds pretty good to me! Obviously, punctuality is essential with speed dating. If you are late you will throw the numbers out. Most companies make a point of saying that if you are late they will cancel you. Likewise, once you have arrived, you are there for the duration, little short of medical emergency, because once again you will be messing up the ratios for everyone else. So if you are going to go, be on time and plan on staying to the end. What to Wear: You are going to be noticed at this event so you need to take some care with your appearance. Make sure your outfit is venue appropriate. You should select an outfit that you feels flatters you and that you are comfortable in. Ladies, if you are going to be seated for the night do not wear a shirt that gapes when you sit down, or offers him a view down to your navel. Men, clean hands are a must as she will be looking at them. Obviously good personal hygiene is essential. A little of your favourite scent is good too, so long as you are not swimming in it. Natural make up supposedly works best for the girls at these gigs as the fellas find too much enhancing off putting and wonder what is underneath that needs hiding. The more confident you are feeling the more approachable you will be. First Impressions do Count. It can take as little as 4 seconds to mentally check out someones face, clothes and body. People make snap judgments and will size up the possibilities of a relationship within minutes of meeting. In fact, researchers at Ohio University, using 164 new students, showed that after just 3 minutes the students could predict what sort of relationship they would have with their fellow students. Categories included good friends, lovers, and never speak again. The students who only chatted for 3 minutes were just as successful at predicting the future relationships as those who spent 6 or 10 minutes speaking. The more positively they viewed the potential future relationship played a huge part in how hard they then worked to get the relationship to work. The self fulfilling prediction then came into play and determined how much effort they were willing to put in. Obviously, if one party has negative thoughts they will be preventing the relationship moving further. The correlation to speed dating here being that they will not tick their card and adios. How to make a Good Impression. What to say: Most people find that the more attractive the person they are trying to impress the more nervous they get. However, it wont really matter what you say in the first 30 seconds because you will both be busy checking the other out. Always speak within reason. Say nothing inappropriate e.g.: What were you thinking with the hair? Here is a great little strategy to employ when the nerves strike. 1: Compliment them. Take a quick look at what they have obviously worked hard at or spent a lot of money on and choose that. People love to be praised and this is a quick way to win affection. Dont get too carried away and come over as insincere or creepy. 2: Ask a simple question. 3: Introduce yourself. At this point your date should feel secure. Then smile, look them in the eye and ask another question. If you find it is really hard work to click, then you are probably not destined to be soul mates. After the introductions are over keep the conversation flowing: 1: keep the talking about them. 2: steer away from shallow questions; try to make them a bit more meaningful. 3: dont make it an interrogation or treat it like a job interview. 4: find out what they find is fun or exciting. 5: other safe topics are movies, siblings, past holidays, career in brief, sports, hobbies, movies and current affairs. 6: dont forget the end goal is to get a date. 7: try to make them feel better about themselves without being insincere. Body Language. With time being an issue with speed dating, a lot of the signals you are giving and receiving are on a purely subconscious level. Body language and sexual chemistry everywhere! Here are some body language tips to make sure you are reading it right. Give off seriously interested gestures to keep them interested subconsciously. The interested girl. Seated with legs crossed and her hand on her thigh. By sitting up straight she is showing her interest. Looking straight in your eyes with a tilted head shows a high level of interest. Exposing the wrist or palms shows honesty. Running fingers through her hair is another strong sexual body language gesture for flirting. Women also play with their necks or necklace when they are sexually interested. Girls also tend to start sticking out their chests when they spy a fellow they are interested in. The interested guy. When guys go into flirt mode they will start stroking their ties, rubbing their noses and also playing with their hair. Depending on seating arrangements they will also often open up their laps to display their packages. Bad signs for all include fidgeting and fiddling but can also just indicate nervousness. Holding your glass at chest height or higher makes you appear defensive. Arms crossed over your chest is also perceived to be some sort of physical barrier. Sitting slumped is also not seen as good body language. Beware of appearing to be shifty eyed. Advantages of Speed Dating: 1: safe 2: allows singles to meet a large number of other singles at one event. 3: great if you have already dated all your friends friends or have a limited social circle of singles. 4: no face to face rejection. 5: both women and men have to interact, thus leveling the gender playing field. 6: time limits ensure that no one is stuck for too long with anyone they do not fancy. 7: women can go along with their friends. 8: you can hear what is being said. 9: age appropriate ranges. 10: cost efficient as you get numerous dates for the price of one. 11: no monopolizing of the hot talent, every one gets to spend time with everyone else. 12: you dont have to be able to dance to impress anyone. 13: no tacky pick-up lines to listen to. What not to do while Speed Dating: !: Never give out personal details including phone numbers, last names, addresses, business cards or email addresses for safety purposes. 2: Never harass other dates to tick their date card for you. 3: Dont treat it like a job interview. 4: Dont be disrespectful. 5: No behaviour that could be construed as sexual harassment. 6: Never be late. 7: No asking for another date. The Basics of Working With Polymer Clay
by kimberli kendrick - Tuesday, 27 November 2007, 07:34 AM
Anyone in the world
By Tracey Wilson Polymer Clay is taking crafters to new artistic heights. It doesnt matter what your craft is or your medium of choice- crafters are learning new ways every day to incorporate this versatile clay into their craft. Polymer Clay comes in every color imaginable, including awesome metallic and pearlescent colors. There are several different types of clays to choose from, some a little stiffer than others. So youll want to experiment to find the one you prefer to work with. If you want to get serious about using your versatile clay, several tools are available to help you design and make that perfect piece that you are after. A smooth work surface and a rolling pin are a must! If you buy the stiffer clay, youll want to invest in a pasta or clay- conditioning machine. The embellishments you can use with polymer clay are endless: push molds, knives, sculpting tools, drill, sandpaper, paint, rubber stamps, needle tools, etc Be sure that no matter what type of clay you buy, that you condition (work with it, running it through a pasta machine, rolling, etc) the clay thoroughly. This not only makes it easier to work with, but releases PVC particles that strengthen the clay during baking- keeping it from cracking during hardening. Always follow the manufacturers directions exactly during baking. Some great tips for polymer clay enthusiasts are included below: Never attempt to work on a wooden surface. The texture and particles from the wood get mixed into your clay and affects the color. I always tape plain white computer paper down on my work area to work with the clay on. -Orange Kitty I use an old wooden Lazy Susan covered with wax paper (taped securely on the bottom). The work in progress can then be turned easily without unnecessary handling or fingerprints on finished sculptures. Old dental tools, wooden toothpicks sanded down to a rounded edge and make-up sponges work well as tools. -Maggie Meyers Empty egg cartons are great for storing small balls of clay. I wrap them in wax paper, they are easy to locate and the lid keeps them from drying out. To varnish small beads, I put them on toothpicks and stick them into a block of soft clay like Sculpy III. I use a rolling plastic container with 5 drawers that I purchased at an office supply store to store all my clay, beads, powders, etc. That way I can roll it into the family room and watch TV with my family without making multiple trips to my workroom. I covered empty small mayonnaise and jam jars with bright polymer clay designs to hold all my tools. To keep track of my colors, I keep a small notebook, which I glue a slice of each cane I create and also make a note of how I blended the colors. I also keep a photo album of each design in case I want to make it again." -Mary Jenkins I am a newbie to poly clays. I ran out of wax paper when I first discovered the clay about a month ago and I found that freezer paper works very well as a surface that can be moved around and even baked on. But I prefer to put the pieces to be baked on parchment paper. I can use it over and over and I don't have to worry about contaminating a cookie sheet!" -Karen I use my pasta machine to do all of my blending. I set it to #1 and send each color through it until it's softer, then I add layers of the colors I want to blend together. As each piece rolls out, I fold it in half and send it through again. It takes about 20 times to completely blend the colors, but I'm not able to knead the clay without arthritis pain, so it's worth it." -MellybeanTC I have been using a coffee grinder (rummage sale stuff--about a buck!) to start to condition my clay. It works really well and is easier to clean than a small food processor. Makes crumbs that can be easily squished together and run through my pasta maker. " -Liz I love using a stitch ripper. The round little ball end is great for making small holes, especially for nostrils! The pointed part is great for adding textures. -Kelly Reynolds I had no tools when I bought my first box of clay. I didn't want to make an investment in tools, so I started making my own out of the clay. I used a clear plastic CD container to roll out various sizes of pencils. Some fat, some thin, some curved, with various size tips. After firing I sanded them to refine their surfaces if needed. I also rolled flat sheets of clay on different surfaces to make templates. I have acquired tools since, but the tools I make are my favorite. -Susan Schlyer I found that clay won't stick to a quilter's cutting board, so I put a large one under a glass cutting board, leaving a margin of about 4" all the way around. This way I can easily measure the pieces of clay I need to cut, plus have all the space around the glass on which to place pieces of clay ready to cut, or that are already cut. The cutting board can be cleaned with alcohol when it gets dirty. -Connie Okdie Use these tips to enjoy and enhance your polymer clay experience. Remember, working with this versatile clay the sky is the limit ... so do what crafters do best, be creative! Provacative Research Works
by kimberli kendrick - Monday, 26 November 2007, 08:01 AM
Anyone in the world
By Henry DeVries If you want to double your business, then you need to get inside your client's head through proprietary research and provocative results. By conducting proprietary research, you obtain special information that prospective clients can't find elsewhere. The foundation of client seduction is to give away useful information that demonstrates to clients you have the expertise to help them. Giving away general problem-solving information is good, but it is not good enough. You need to offer specifics, and the more provocatively you can package the results, the better. Professionals, consultants and technology entrepreneurs can use proprietary research to obtain clients, even during tough economic times. A recent case in point is Enterpulse, an Atlanta-based Web services firm that designs and builds corporate Web sites. Projects can be extremely complex, encompassing both the external and internal Web presence of a company and serving an intricate network of customers, employees and suppliers. According to Enterpulse, 2002 was a "now or never" year as the deepening technology recession further eroded sales and prospects. Many of the firm's larger and better-known competitors had gone bankrupt in the previous 12 months. Enterpulse, a midsized firm, actually viewed this as an opportunity to become a bigger player and gain market share in its category. But the company needed to make a bold move to raise its visibility, boost sales and leave its few remaining competitors behind. To overcome the challenges in communicating with Enterpulse's audiences, the firm commissioned a proprietary research study through Ketchum Public Relations of heavy business Internet users. The survey results would be useful to interest the media in a new story angle on the Internet, and also to give executive information technology decision-makers compelling data for evaluating their companies' Web presence from a user perspective. The result was 265 qualified U.S. leads for the sales force to pursue, with three of these leads quickly converting to signed contracts. The entire budget was $100,000, including $25,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. With an average engagement of $250,000 per client, this means a return on investment of at least 650 percent. Internet death penalty How did they do it? Enterpulse had to overcome two pivotal challenges in communicating with prospective customers: Reporters Ketchum talked with were not particularly interested in writing about the Internet anymore -- unless the reporter could unearth a new angle and back it up with examples. Making the case for a user-centric Web experience would require strong evidence to convince an analytical, data-oriented audience of IT decision-makers. Ketchum Research developed and conducted a survey of more than 300 heavy Internet users in the fields of IT, sales/marketing, purchasing and human resources. The proprietary research results revealed that users overwhelmingly expect Web sites to be user-friendly or they won't return. Enterpulse and Ketchum called this end result the "Internet Death Penalty" and showcased the phrase in press materials and media outreach to attract maximum attention. If you want attention, you need to be provocative. How to publicize results But being provocative is only the first step. You also need to be proactive in spreading the results of the research. Ketchum helped Enterpulse CEO Michael Reene write a provocative white paper to alert companies to the fact that they should evaluate their Web presence from a user perspective, or else risk alienating customers. The white paper was featured on the home page of Enterpulse's Web site, www.Enterpulse.com. The firm traded the white paper for e-mail addresses and required interested persons wishing to download a free copy to first input their contact information into an online form. Enterpulse hired Ketchum to conduct a 30-day media relations campaign. The news release was issued via Business Wire and Internet Wire. Ketchum also contacted national business media, the top 100 daily newspapers, and key trade media in the IT, banking and retail vertical markets. Reporters were provided with a link to the white paper for further information and also offered a detailed analysis of the survey results. Media interviews were conducted with Reene, who used real-world examples of Web sites relevant to the survey results to support the white paper's premise. A bylined article (based on the news release) was written and placed in several IT-oriented publications. Media coverage for the survey clearly convinced information technology decision-makers to take a closer look at Enterpulse's thesis -- as evidenced by more than 1,000 downloads of the white paper on the Enterpulse Web site by high-profile organizations such as Disney, American Airlines, Princeton University, Hallmark and Panasonic. To date, 18 daily newspapers, 60 metro business journals, 20 industry/IT trade publications and four radio spots have featured Enterpulse's findings. Coverage highlights include USA Today, Newsbytes, CNET, InfoWorld, 60-plus metro business weeklies around the country and Stores Magazine. The campaign appears to be spreading virally over time, with additional daily newspapers, Web sites and other outlets continuing to pick up the survey results from the original wire story and from publications that featured the story. Always keep in mind that the information a potential client most wants to know is: "How does my company compare to others?" There is a hidden fear in the back of every executive's mind that some critical piece of business intelligence is missing. Nobody wants to be behind the learning curve, especially in today's rapidly changing business environment. Understanding Women - For Guys

By Zakaria Adam It is shocking how many guys are constantly at odds with themselves trying to picture what it is to be in Love. The worst thing you can do is come up with some sleazy tricks which may land you in bed but will leave you sorely disappointed when it comes to experiencing the passion of Love. In fact women are not as complicated to understand if you realize the basic difference between the approaches to life of men and women. Men are brought up with the expectation of being the athletic and sporty warrior. Women, however, are taught from childhood to be graceful, gentle and considerate. These two stereotypes can make a person's personality completely different. In the first type you will need to logically look at life as a massive power struggle in which you must find your place. In the second type your outlook will be that life is all about emotionally experiencing and enjoying yourself with others. What happens often in relationships is partners polarize themselves in either of these stereotypes. To learn to Love you must drop this stereotypical approach to dealing with yourself. Instead accept both logic and emotion can exist in you at the same time. On the one hand you can work hard and battle for your career. On the other you can be passionate and enjoy the good things of life without being judgmental and always trying to justify yourself. Own both parts of who you are. Learn to listen calmly to your lover and avoid trying to push your ideas of the world onto her. Accept her as an individual of her own with her own way of thinking and living. How to Take a Test
by kimberli kendrick - Saturday, 24 November 2007, 12:26 PM

By Susan Kruger Being prepared for a test is absolutely essential, but there are some things you can do while taking a test to reduce anxiety and improve your score. The following action plan will give you a greater sense of control during tests, which will allow you to be more relaxed and think more clearly. These tips are also good for most standardized tests. ** Action Plan ** - Be good to yourself. You have heard it dozens of times, but good rest, a balanced breakfast, and drinking water keep your brain healthy, which help you think more clearly when taking a test. - Know your time limit. Before the test date, ask your teacher what type of problems will be on the exam, how many, and how much time you will have to take it. Then, determine how much time you should spend on each problem/section of the test so you can properly pace yourself. - Read the directions. Twice. Any teacher who has ever graded a test will verify that MANY points are lost by students who neglect to read (and follow) directions. - Scan the entire test once. Before answering any questions, quickly read through the problems. Just as athletes warm-up before a game, scanning a test gives your brain a chance to warm-up to the information it will need to access, which will dramatically improve your performance. - Begin answering questions. - Stuck? Skip it. When you are stuck, you can waste a lot of valuable time fretting over ONE question. As you fret, you loose time, get nervous and loose confidence. Before you know it, you are rushing through the last 30 problems because you were stuck on problem #5. Instead, skip that problem, moved on to the next one, and come back to #5 after you have completed the remaining questions. You will be more relaxed as you complete the rest of the test and may even discover the answer to #5 while reading question #29. - Breathe. If you begin to feel anxious because you came across five questions in a row that could not answer, take slow and deep breaths. Deep breathing controls your reaction to anxiety and keeps your brain in rational mode. You will need rational mode to make good guesses on those problems! - When in doubt, go with you first hunch. For most tests, you are not penalized for guessing. So, after you have completed the rest of the test and still do not have a clue about the correct answer to a question, choose the option that you *first* thought was correct. Your unconscious mind may be trying to tell you something. - Do not turn your test in early! Every point earned on a test puts you one point closer to a better grade. Take advantage of extra time to make sure you read each question correctly, filled in the correct bubbles on the Scantron sheet, followed the directions properly, etc. You will find an error about 50% of the time. **Specific Test Tips** Multiple Choice: Read all of the options first, then cross out the obvious wrong answers to narrow down your choices. Essay: If possible, do essay questions last to give your brain more exposure to the information before creating your own answers. Before you write long paragraphs, create a short outline in the margin using key words to help you write a more focused answer. If you run out of time, your teacher may give you partial credit based on your outline. True/False: These are probably the most misleading and misused test questions, so approach them with caution. Take your time to read each statement twice and look for trick words (like not) that can change the entire meaning of the statement. Fill-in-the-Blank: First, fill in only the blanks you know 100% and cross out used words in the word bank, then complete the rest of the problems. Reread all answers to ensure the filled-in words make sense in each statement and that all grammar tenses, singular and plural nouns, etc. fit the rest of the sentence. ** In Conclusion ** There is no substitution for a good study plan before a test, but there are tactics to help you be more strategic during your test-taking performance. A Tree Grows In Brooklyn -- Good or Bad?

Anyone in the world
By Connie LeGendre I admit, trees provide color, shade, healthy benefits for humans by oxygenating the air, food and habitat for small animals and microorganisms, and reduce the impacts of storm water runoff. Sounds good? In fact, May 24, 2006 in the style section of The New York Times, an architectural couple living in Brooklyn settled for limiting rather than expanding the renovation of their 600 square foot house with a 400 square foot rental in the back to save the tree in their front yard. They felt it not only shaded their home in summer, but provided a park-like atmosphere. This sacrifice also produced some might creative design solutions. It's worth taking a look at the article. And you ask, "Isn't that a good thing?" N-O, no! Not only did they squeeze themselves into a space sardines would have problems inhabiting, but they did the same to cash-paying tenants. A client lives in a new development in an Atlanta, Georgia suburb. She bought her house because it was at the end of a cul de sac at the edge of the woods with a huge tree in her backyard. Again, that park-like atmosphere. She loved it even though as an asthmatic she can not go outside and enjoy it. However, one day she did go outside when she kept hearing something on her roof. It turned out it was the overhanging tree branches. In one season, the canopy covered her home from the backyard to the front yard with no end in sight as to its growth. She immediately had the tree cut down--not because of the problems it could cause to her house, but because she was deathly afraid of the various rodents using the tree as an animal condo--squirrels, possums, and rats. Indeed, the men who cut her tree down found a possum. When my client saw how carelessly they were handling the apparently lifeless creature, she was horrified. She ran from the house and yelled, "Get rid of that thing. Don't you know it's dangerous?" Laughing at her concern, the men insisted it was dead but were astonished when they finally took it across the road, let it go, and it lumbered away. She asked them, "Have you never heard the phrase 'playing possum'?" Her explanation for braving an asthmatic attack from the surrounding greenery was that when possums bite you, their jaws lock and they can't let go. Yikes. Anyone still think trees are good? That was not the end of her run in with the rodent condo. Sometime later the client called and said she had a leak in her Kitchen ceiling. Now, this is a three-year old house. Roofs don't deteriorate in three years unless they were poorly installed or something beats them up. I told her it was probably from the tree swaying in the high winds. When the builder took a look, you guessed it, flashing was bent and shingles were damaged or missing due to her beloved tree whipping around and scraping her roof. You may think pruning the tree would do the trick. Another client's shower drain was backing up. It was an old house with several mature trees in the front yard. Her ranch house had a kitchen on one end and bathrooms on the far end--some sixty feet apart. She wanted to call the rooter guy. I told her to save her money for the tree cutter. Of course, as most homeowners, she thought that was sacrilege. Cut down her beautiful trees with the shade, the color, blah, blah, blah. She would sooner cut off her right arm. I finally convinced her the tree roots had invaded her plumbing pipes because trees will seek water and strangle your pipes. When the plumber dug up the ground around the pipes, sure enough, they were completely throttled. She had to replace the pipes from the kitchen to the baths and cut down two threes that were against the house. Did I mention she lived in California where they build houses on concrete slab on grade? They dug a trench through the concrete slab from the kitchen to the baths like a surgeon performing a cesarian section. Are you beginning to see a pattern? Ready to concede? One more fact if you are still not convinced trees are bad. In architecture school, we spent what seemed like five minutes on landscaping and thirty seconds on the dangerous effects of trees and bushes on houses. Maybe it was a little longer, but in a five-year bachelor program, things go by pretty quickly. What I remember is, trees are like icebergs; the part you see is a tiny fraction of what is below. To be perfectly fair to trees, some spread their roots less than others. But they don't call an oak tree a "mighty oak" for nothing. Any tree can harbor unwanted critters, damage your roof, strangle your pipes, crack your foundation, split rocks, and open craters in your driveway large enough to swallow small cars. Finally, trees can be bad and good. Do some research before you plant a tree near your home. And if the battle is between your home and the tree, the tree will win. So, cut it down. Believe me, even in Brooklyn there is more than one tree. Connie LeGendre empowers homeowners designing their interiors through e-courses and newsletters.
